Church towers in Eger

The view of Eger is undoubtedly dominated by towers, as there are about twenty churches, chapels in the town.

Locals have always welcomed settlers, therefore there are several religious groups in Eger. Since the town is the centre of an archbishopric, the Catholic community is the biggest, but a Reformed, a Baptist and an Evangelist community is also present. The living church has preserved its traditions, there are several pilgrimages and Maria-Route, the pilgrimage route through Middle Europe runs also via the town.

The Basilica of Eger is the second largest church, Minorite church on Dobó  square is considered to be the nicest Baroque church in Hungary. The wall of icons in Greek Orthodox-Serbian church is also unique. One of the most important, largest meetings of Hungarian Catholic youth  is held in neighbouring Egerszalók every year. Clergy has always had important role in the development of the town, they had several important buildings built: besides churches the Lyceum, schools, community buildings, the hospital. The Diocese Library was founded by bishop Károly Eszterházy where unique pieces of literature are kept, like an original letter by Mozart. The  renovation of the archbishop's palace has just started after the completion of which major part of the building can be visited.
